Troop 53 is sponsoring a 7 night backpacking trip at Philmont Scout Ranch in June 2025. For many scouts, this is a penultimate scouting experience, and spending 5+ nights in the wilderness is an important accomplishment. This will be a shorter trip than recent ones, but we expect to take a more aggressive itinerary. Mr. White and Mr. Morgan will be leading the trip, and Mr. Cone and Mr. Clements will be assisting. We have openings for ~5 more scouts to attend, but they must be 14 years old as of June 2025.
If your scout has not gone backpacking with the troop, they must attend the trips in the fall to make sure this is something they want to do. Backpacking is a skill, and the more you practice, the more enjoyable it is.
In order to make this the best possible scouting experience, we are setting some minimum expectations for those attending:
Participate in three shakedown trips (see below)
Commit to conditioning activities, through sports and group activities (stadium rucks)
Scouts and adult leaders fully trained (Intro. Leadership Skills for Troop / Intro to Outdoor Leadership Skills)
The cost for the Philmont trek is $1,335 per participant plus we will have travel (air/bus) and misc. costs of an additional ~$800 per person. A deposit of $150 is required to reserve your space, and additional payments of $592.50 are due October 1 and March 1. There are scholarship opportunities through the council. If cost is a barrier to attending, please reach out to Mr. Bradford or Mr. White.
